That Thing Called Love - Tuhin A. Sinha Review

One Night Stand

The Title of my review may sound a bit cliched ,but this is how my encouter has been with this book. I started reding this book at 12 midnight and i could not get off until i had finished reading this book(although i had to miss next day`s work). When I bought this book, i thought i will be able to wrap it in a week`s time, as i had always been a slow and steady reader enjoying every moment of the book and trying to connect with the characters in the book.

The story revolves around three friends whose motto is to gratify themselves. One of them has a sense of infidelity towards his wife and he enjoys doing this, other is a faithful and commited `one woman man' until life takes a serious U-turn for him.The protagonist of this story is a confused man who is always on the lookout for the perfect girl in his life. His vision is so tunneled and focussed towards his goal that he tries to look out for the set of characterstics in her like marking a checklist in the grocerry store. The story is written in the backdrop of Mumbai and its rains.

The writer has carved a niche for his characters .They are pretty sure of what they want out of life. One of the character Vishal loves going into a fling whenever he gets a chance .But I hav a problem that how could such a person who has been a casanova all through his life changes his mind when his wife gets pregnant(ofcourse with his child ).Is just the feeling of `going to be a father` change someone`s mind so drastically?

The Second character Anil is a perfect husband and has clearly been bored of being so. He tries to cross the limits in a rather unconventional ways. The writer has clearly imbibed a sense of insecurity in his mind towards his wife and when he sees the small spark ,he let go all his insecurities and the complex he has been suffering .

The writer has tried to end the story of each character by asking them to pay for their deeds which is quite right in many ways. The protagonist,Mayank meets a married Woman much older than him and falls for her despite he being engaged and not being able to find the 'perfect girl image ' in his fiancee. He did not not confess his feelings until he realise that he is obsessed with her . The sense of obsession is clearly described by the writer as when it breaks it gets a feeling of extreme hatred in his heart contrary to extreme love which once prevailed.

They are the same part of the herd who tries to maintain a fragile balance between their work and personal life. There is a weak persona of every female character .I hated the part when Anil's wife tries to blame herself for something which she had been on the receiving end .The woman today is much more strong and she should have made things clear but not in this way.

Vishal's wife Gargi makes a decision in haste....(I guess thta is the way women are) which had been an important one in her life. The third girl Revathi(Mayank's perfect girl ) is an over-courteous stupid girl who does not know what she wants out of life and tries to oblige every one unnecesarrily.

The story is rushed through in the end and the writer has finished it in haste without living up to the expectations of the reader. The End could have been much more interesting.

This is a must read one as it is a good bargain at the cost of 100 rupees. The story reflects our changing mindset towards Sex (pre-marital or extra-marital) and describes it as an important phase in a relationship which sometimes becomes the need. The defintion of morality is not only related to physical morality,Its wide spectrum is reflected in this story.

Enjoy Reading!!!!!!!!!
